Sweet Rice, more commonly known as Sticky Rice originates from the recipes of northern Thai cuisine. Although its name suggests a sweet flavor, the rice itself is not naturally sweet. Sweet Rice is prepared by first soaking for several hours followed by steaming, in order to bring out the soft and chewy consistency of the rice. It is widely eaten throughout Thailand and can be prepared as a side dish or as dessert (by adding sweeteners).

Sweet Rice can be eaten as a side dish by forming into tight portions and is a great complement to dishes such as Som Tum (Papaya Salad), barbecued meats, and Thai curry. Well known desserts such as mango or Thai custard with sweet coconut sticky rice is made using this special grain. As an added benefit, Sweet Rice can be molded into various shapes and sizes for serving as dessert.
